Beekman Charter to dismiss early because of smell - The News Star

Concerns about a natural gas leak near Beekman Charter School in Morehouse Parish were unfounded, but the school dismissed at 1 p.m. Tuesday because of a strong smell.

According to the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office, there were calls in the morning because of the strong smell of natural gas.

It was determined that someone dropped two drums that previously contained Mercaptan at Roadrunner Recycling, which is about a third of a mile from the school. The chemical is added to natural gas lines to serve as a warning because natural gas is naturally colorless and odorless.

The recycling company filled the drums with water before cutting into them to reduce the risk of fire or explosion, and adding the water made the smell very strong.

Mercaptan is not hazardous. The Louisiana State Police hazardous materials team and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality have verified the situation is safe, but the school opted to dismiss early because of the strength of the odor.
