Wildfire smoke invades Utah, brings 'burning' smell, unhealthy air quality - KJZZ

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — KUTV has received numerous calls asking about the thick smoke covering a good portion of the state and lowering visibility to dangerous levels.

The smoke began filling in Friday morning after a cold front passed through the state and continues to do so.

The front is essentially pulling the thick smoke into the area from the west-northwest where very large wildfires are currently burning.

Utah emergency officials said the smoke we're seeing is not coming from any active incidents in the area.

Visibility quickly dropped below 2 miles in many cities across Utah.

Air quality will remain unhealthy through the day but the National Weather Service at Salt Lake City said things should start to improve by the evening hours of Friday.

As of now, the air has been labeled as "unhealthy" for several northern and central Utah counties, with Tooele County showing numbers in the "very unhealthy" category.

You can find the latest air quality information here.

Everyone is encouraged to stay indoors if they can while the smoke billows through.

The forecast shows smoke will still be an issue through the weekend, however, the thickness should disperse.
