WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - The overwhelming smell of smoke and the visible haze in many central and northern Wisconsin cities Thursday morning is due to the wildfires in Minnesota.

NewsChannel 7 viewers reported smelling smoke in Antigo, Rib Falls, Edgar, Abbotsford, Merrill and Minocqua.

Dozens of homes, cabins and outbuildings have been destroyed or damaged in northeastern Minnesota as the state’s largest wildfire continues burning uncontained, according to Superior National Forest officials. Authorities say 12 homes or cabins and 57 outbuildings have been lost in the Greenwood Lake fire that has consumed 34 square miles of forest land.

Police departments in Wausau and Keshena have received calls about the smoke issue. Both departments have investigated have concluded the wildfire is to blame.

clarification: A previous version of this article stated the cause of the smoke was the California wildfires. The Wisconsin DNR said the Minnesota wildfires are to blame.
