DO you nose what hidden signals certain pongs could be telling you?

The Times has told how scientists have discovered women can smell fear.

Women who smell fear are less trusting, says one German study

The study by Heinrich Heine University in Dusseldorf found ladies who picked up whiffs of anxiety were less trusting.

Researchers said the reaction was caused by a primitive survival instinct to befriend other women.

But some other odours can give you warning signals too.

From rotten eggs to sickly sweet syrup, these are the telling smells to sniff out.

Burnt toast - brain trauma

THIS smell is often touted as a sign of a brain tumour or stroke.

And this at times is correct but not for the reasons you think.

Both health problems cause phantosmia which causes sufferers to hallucinate smells.

The condition is caused when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off.

So some patients might imagine they are smelling toast - while others could imagine other pongs too.

Fish - burning appliances

IF you get a fishy stench in your home but you haven’t been cooking fish for dinner, you might want to check your white goods for burning sockets, light fixtures, or appliances overheating.

Check and unplug any devices you think may be the culprit and get an electrician in.

If the smell is overwhelming and you suspect a fire, call 999 straightaway.

Rotten eggs - gas leak

WHILE an eggy pong could be blamed on the dog, it might be something more sinister.

Carbon monoxide is naturally odourless so companies add a sulphuric smell much like rotten eggs so gas can be detected.

A gas leak can make you feel dizzy and give you a headache and ignite around anaked flame.

If you suspect a leak, call National Gas Emergencies number on 0800 111 999 and leave the house.

Ammonia - dead mice

IF your home smells of paint stripper, there could be a rotting carcass lurking.

Dead mice, rats and birds all produce a strong paint stripper like smell as bacteria breaks down their bodies.

As they decompose they release compounds like hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol, and benzene derivatives which cause a telltale pong.

So it might be an idea to check you haven’t forgotten about any mouse traps.

Sweet syrup - car problems

IF your motor starts smelling sickly sweet, it might be time to check under the bonnet.

Leaking coolant can have a syrupy smell so check under your car to see if it’s been leaking or inside for damp.

This can cause your engine to overheat and could potentially total your car if it goes unchecked.

If you suspect coolant is the culprit, take your car into the garage for a service.

No smell - Covid-19

LOSING your sense of smell altogether is one of the three main symptoms of coronavirus.

The other two include a high temperature and a new, continuous cough.

If you notice usual whiffs have gone or changed, book a PCR through gov.uk as soon as possible.

Remember to self-isolate while people in your household only need to isolate if they have symptoms, or are unvaccinated adults.

Cat pee - Black mould

SMELL cat pee but don’t own a cat? You could have mould.

While most moulds smell musty or earthy, certain types of the fungus can smell just like cat wee.

Toxic black mould in particular can give off a urine-like aroma and is caused by condensation.

The mould’s spores can cause an allergic reaction with symptoms including breathing problems and nausea.

To avoid, keep your home well ventilated and to get rid of it use a disinfecting mildew remover.

Nail polish remover - diabetes

IF your breath starts to smell sweet and fruity like nail polish remover, you could have both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

The acetone like smell is caused by high levels of a chemical ketones which your liver uses to break down fats.

These build up when someone with diabetes has low levels of insulin.

If you think you might have diabetes, visit your GP.

Almonds - Cyanide

THE poison cyanide can smell like bitter almonds - but only to some people.

One in four of us have a recessive gene which allows us to smell the toxin found in trace amounts in almonds and fruit pips.

Cyanide comes in gas or crystal form and can be deadly if consumed or inhaled.

Mild cases of poisoning can cause dizziness, headaches and rapid heart rate.

Wood - Old pipes

IF water from your taps smells a bit woody, it could mean your water is supplied with old pipes.

The first plastic pipes laid to connect water mains in the 1960s and 1970s contain alkathenes which produces the smell.

This type of plastic is not harmful and running the taps should reduce the smell.

But if you want to get rid of the smell altogether, you will have to replace your pipes.
