The most common aromatic plants that can be found in Spanish markets are thyme, rosemary, lavender, mint, spearmint, basil, and sage, among others. At home, using these plants in the kitchen promotes creativity. They are the condiment in a large number of recipes, but also the main ingredient in herbal teas.
In addition, as their name suggests, they fill balconies and gardens with aromas, generating well-being and relaxation. Furthermore, gardening encourages citizens to be active. Several studies also indicate that the mere presence of plants indoors and outdoors improves the emotional well-being of people.
The cultivation of aromatic plants is simple, as they are very resistant species that only require a good dose of sunlight and moderate watering. In fact, this ability to live in periods of drought favors sustainable gardening. In addition, aromatic plants promote the presence of pollinating insects in cities and orchards, and if they are grown for consumption, it reduces the carbon footprint. These plants are grown practically throughout all of the Spanish territories, both in the coastal and inland areas.
The Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers and Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers, and Live Plants (Fepex) are promoting the Europa Florece campaign, which aims to highlight the positive influence of plants on the physical and psychological well-being of people in their home, work, and leisure spots. The campaign is co-financed by the EU and it is being held in Spain and Germany, an important destination for the Spanish nurseries' plant production. Last year, Spain exported plants and flowers worth more than 43 million euro to this country.
