LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) Tate & Lyle is working to contain a smell coming from the Lafayette South Plant. Residents have complained to both WLFI and the City of Lafayette about the issue.
The company says the problem arose in part because of the extreme weather the area has experienced over the past few weeks. Tate & Lyle says it has affected its water retention system and treatment solutions complex.
Bryan Thomas is a resident who lives in the Stones Crossings neighborhood nearby the plant.
"It's hard to quantify a smell, but it just feels like it's been a stronger odor I'd day in the last year," Thomas said.
Mayor Tony Roswarski says the city is aware of the issue and is working with Tate & Lyle to get it solved. The company has invested $75 million in the plant last year to help combat environmental and smell issues, according to Roswarski.
"They understand that there's a problem and they're working diligently to correct it and you know they really have become good corporate citizens, neighbors," Roswarski said.
Tate & Lyle has issued WLFI two statements regarding the issue:
"We are aware of the recent complaints [regarding our Lafayette South plant] and are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. The recent weather extremes have made managing the water retention systems and our treatment solutions complex. But we are actively managing this and continuously monitor our processes for improvements. We are planning additional measures across the summer to help mitigate further issues."
"Our local team is working to ensure additional monitoring and processing protocols are in place as well as adding supplementary filtering measures to support continued improvements. As weather allows, we’ll also complete a full drain and re-line of the retention system."
