The salty smell of the ocean was overtaken by a “strong odor” at Sandy Beach in Cohasset recently.

There were discolored sand and “smelling like sewage,” according to WCVB.

But the town wasn’t sure what it was. So, on Thursday “the Town Health and DPW departments conducted a subsurface site investigation.”

The cause? Decomposing seaweed.

“It is likely that the record levels of rain and high temperatures in July have created an ideal incubation condition for microbes decomposing the seaweed, accounting for both the high bacterial counts and the strong odor,” the town’s website states.

After additional tests, there was no evidence of any other leaks or buried material.

The town gave credit to Cohasset’s Center for Coastal Research and high school students who help take samples for solving the mystery smell, according to the news station.

The beach will fully be reopened to swimming by Saturday, the town said.
