You never know what you had, until you don’t have it! That is the case for many people across the country who are dealing with the loss of taste and smell due to COVID-19.
A 2021 study in the Journal of Internal Medicine found that over eighty percent of 2500 COVID-19 patients screened lost their taste and smell from the virus. Fifteen percent still didn’t have those senses 60 days after diagnosis. Five percent still didn’t after six months.
Sofia Medina, a Houston resident, was currently suffering from a loss of taste and smell from COVID-19 when she came across a recipe on Tik Tok. “I kind of was willing to try anything at that point just because ten days without taste or smell is pretty interesting if you’ve never experienced that before,” says Medina.
Called the “Jamaican remedy”, Sofia charred a naval orange on her stove, then mixed it with brown sugar all while recording her own Tik Tok. To her surprise, Sofia said she gradually regained the majority of her taste back, although not so much her smell.
“It’s so strange because I don’t know if it was a coincidence, I don’t know if it really was the remedy that cured me, I don’t know. I think the combination of the citrus and the brown sugar together kind of ignites something in your taste buds,” continues Medina.
The video went viral and now has over six million views. Something Sofia says she never anticipated happening. Other users on the viral video platform had mixed experiences with the remedy, with some say it worked and others didn’t.
Another user, @Madisontaylorn also said the remedy helped.
