Houston, we've got a smelly water problem.

Just a week after the bitter winter storm that devastated Texas, a strange odor is being detected in Houston's water supply. According to Houston public works officials, there have now been 9,400 complaints lodged about water woes.

"So can anyone explain the smell of Houston water since it came back online? I assume this is normal in some way. It's almost an earthy/minerally smell. But it's noticeable," Matt Lanza with Space City Weather tweeted.

Some Houston-area residents have reported it simply smells "fishy."

"Ours isn’t earthy/minerally, ours is straight fishy. Smells like Galveston Bay in the shower," Kristen Trahan tweeted.

Despite its scent, the water is safe to drink, according to the city of Houston officials.

"The city of Houston boil water notice has been lifted. You may use for drinking, cooking washing..." Mayor Turner tweeted Sunday.

Since Houston's water supply derives from area lakes, the water can emit a foul odor depending upon a number of factors including algae and chlorine build-up, Houston city officials say. Approximately 85 percent of the city's water supply comes from Lake Houston, Lake Livingston and Lake Conroe.

If you have any issues with a foul odor clouding your water supply or dirty water, call 311 to get help.
