(WSIL) -- Losing your sense of smell is one unique and unsettling symptom of COVID-19. News 3 followed-up with a viewer who had COVID-19 about her efforts to regain her sense of smell.

Heather Sieberg says she's still struggling getting her sense of smell back.

"You know at first I thought oh, this is obviously a COVID thing and that's what the doctors said and I thought oh, it would come back. I expected it to come back at lot sooner. I was sick in August. Right? And here it is January and I'm still not back to normal."

A study from the University of East Anglia's Norwich Medical School says their theory with loss of smell is that the "coronavirus gets into the cells that sit around the smell receptors and causes that layer to swell, squeezing the smell receptors."

Sieberg says she's had to take extra precautions to stay safe while
recovering.

"I will unplug things and make sure I go through the house that could be a fire risk. You've seen the stories. It happens all the time. Thankfully I have dogs and they bark and they will alert me to things," she said.

The study also mentions smell training, which includes grabbing a few household items and smelling them for a couple minutes at least two to three times a day, then record it.

The goal is to get the brain to reorganize itself to compensate for a change or injury. Sieberg says she never tried it but has already been tracking her progress.

"I document and keep a running list of things that I notice that I either can't smell or smell weird," she said.

The study concludes with a minimum three month period for smell training. Sieberg says she's going to stay positive about getting hers back.

"Don't be so hard on yourself I know it will come back and give yourself a pat on the back for that fact that you're through the worst of it," she said.

The smell training can also be done throughout the day, if you have time.
