A “rotten” smell was so bad some residents in Grafton began calling the police.
The smell? Tofu, NBC Boston reported.
“What we found out over the last couple of weeks is that some of our food products smell a little bit more than others, and particularly the tofu was a little smellier than what we were expecting,” FeedBack Earth CEO Alison Greenlee told the news station.
Residents told the news station it smelled “like burnt toast, but like rotten” and that they were looking for dead livestock at one point.
“We couldn’t even leave our house without gasping. It was nasty,” Michelle Larose of Grafton told NBC Boston.
The smell was FeedBack Earth turning food waste into animal feed.
“What we’ve found is that there are some foods that smell a little bit more than others. And specifically what we’ve found is that tofu is a pretty, pretty smelly character,” Greenlee told 7News.
But town officials said they’re working on it.
“The Town of Grafton is aware of the persistent issues surrounding foul odors in the area of Creeper Hill Road, and throughout the Town,” the town said in a statement Thursday. “The Town Administrator’s Office has been working alongside the Board of Health and Feedback Earth to work towards a solution to the smell.”
Feedback Earth ran a trial run with a soy product where they tested “different natural deodorizing chemical agents on the product to find an effective solution,” the town said.
Representatives of the doodorizing system company, Feedback Earth and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Divisions of Air Quality and Division of Solid Waste were there during the testing to watch for any issues, the town said.
