A complaint about odor coming from a Glendora home led to the seizure of 33 cats and one dog from the house last week.

Seven cats were found dead and three were later euthanized because of their conditions, according to a statement from the Inland Valley Humane Society and S.P.C.A.

Humane Society officers cited the owner for failure to care, cruelty to animals, and no licensing, said James Edward, administrative services director at the Humane Society.

On June 10, he said, the city’s code-enforcement unit received a report from a neighbor about a strong odor coming from the home in the 2000 block of East Linfield Street. The next day, the Humane Society was notified and sent eight of its officers, who were assisted by police, to the home.

They saw “deplorable living conditions, with overflowing cat-litter boxes, excrement throughout the home, and multiple cats in several rooms,” the agency’s statement said.

“We have seen an increase in ‘check-condition’ calls this past year as people have been home due to Covid-19,” Nikole Bresciani, president/CEO of the Humane Society, said in a statement.

“It’s vitally important that community members don’t delay in reporting suspicious behavior related to animals or odors coming from a home, because time is of the essence to stop irresponsible pet owners and save those animals’ lives,” she said.

The shelter is accepting donations to help care for the animals at ivhsspca.org/donate. The cats and the dog will become available for adoption at the Humane Society.
