  • Trisha Yearwood revealed she still can’t taste or smell two months after having COVID-19.
  • “Food is kind of different right now,” she said on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I can tell if something’s spicy, that’s about it.”
  • A lost sense of taste or smell is very common in COVID-19 patients, and the recovery time varies from person to person.

In case you missed it, two of our favorite pop culture queens took the small screen together last week. Trisha Yearwood visited The Kelly Clarkson Show, and while the two caught up, Yearwood reflected on her experience with COVID-19. She contracted the virus in February and two months later, still can’t taste or smell anything.

The topic came up when Clarkson noted that Yearwood has lost weight. The country singer first admitted to wearing Spanx, but added: “I lost my taste and smell, so food is kind of different right now.”

She noticed the lack of senses when her husband, Garth Brooks, gave her coffee that she thought was weak. (Yes, he makes her coffee every morning.) “About five days in [to COVID], I’m like, ‘Honey,’” she laughed. “This is weak coffee... I love you, but did you put coffee in here?’ It was just like that.”

Clarkson was surprised to hear that Yearwood still hadn’t fully regained her senses. The “Walkaway Joe” singer nodded, adding, “[It’s been] about eight weeks.”

And now, eating is a totally new experience. “It’s really weird, I think this is how normal people eat,” she said. “So I think they eat when they’re hungry... and then they stop when they’re full.” And because she can’t really determine flavor, she said “it’s all about texture” now, which is odd for someone who loves to cook and has her own cooking show.

“I can tell if something’s spicy, that’s about it,” Yearwood told Clarkson. “So now when I cook I just ask Garth to tell me if it needs more salt and pepper. It’s the weirdest thing.”

Yearwood is still hopeful her senses will return, but unfortunately, there’s no way to know when that will happen. Experts have previously told Prevention that the recovery time varies for everyone who experiences the symptom.

Data released from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) found that, in COVID-19 patients who lost their sense of smell, 27% had “some improvement” within about seven days, while most were better within 10 days.

“Some people get partial function back and some get complete function back,” Eric Holbrook, M.D., director of rhinology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and associate professor in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School previously told Prevention. “Some don’t recover at all. They can have a complete smell loss and never regain function.” He notes that scent training—the process of exposing yourself to various strong smells over a period of time—can be helpful.

As far as who will be the most impacted in the long-run, he said “it’s very hard to tell,” adding: “The only thing we can say is that if, during the year, a patient starts noticing some improvement, that’s a good sign.”
