The Ector County Library is in need of repair or a new home.
When you walk in most days, you might expect to catch the sweet scent of new books, but there’s actually another smell that’s casting a cloud over readers.
“It smells like rotten eggs,” J’Nevelyn White, the Ector County Library’s Managing Librarian of Adult Services, said. “That sort of smell.”
Yeah, not quite the new book smell.
White said the foul smell washes in several times every week and its pushing residents right out the door.
“Some come in and they turn around and come right back out,” she said. “They say no I’m not doing that.”
So, what’s the permanent fix?
The library said it’s brought their case to the county asking for funds to save the library and their nostrils.
White said she’s been worried that if repairs cost too much, the library may have to close. However, Ector County Judge Debi Hays said librarians should breathe easy. She said no matter what there will be a library in Ector County.
“I think a library is a heartbeat to your community,” Hays said. “It is a place where people can come to gather knowledge. To learn about history. To learn an adventure within the bounds of a book.”
What that library will look like is the real question.
Hays said next week she’s putting together a committee that will investigate the smell and find a solution, which could mean repairs or maybe moving the library into another building.
Either way, White said she wants the library protected so the community always has a space to learn and grow.
“Odessa needs us,” White said.
The commissioners plan to meet on Tuesday to select members for the committee. Hopefully, they can find a solution and let this be the final chapter of this problem.
