WeylChem Group of Companies (WCGC) is set to build an aromatic ring chlorination production facility at its site in Frankfurt-Höchst, Germany.
The move will support the group’s existing capabilities and enable it to carry out aromatic ring chlorination for the speciality chemicals market.
In a statement, WCGC said: “The implementation of the new production facility meets the market demand for flexible, continental-European side-chain chlorination governed by European regulations.”
The new facility will also help WCGC to achieve a sustainable production cycle by reducing its waste footprint significantly.
4-Chlorobenzotrichloride (p-TRI), which was earlier disposed as a by-product of side-chain chlorination, will be refined to 2,3,4,5-Tetrachlorobenzoyl chloride (TCBC) in the new plant.
Several other by-products will also be refined or sold as part of the company’s sustainability efforts.
The WeylChem Group now plans to install its own proprietary supply chain to use the by-products in the HALEX plant at Allessa in Frankfurt-Fechenheim.
The facility is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2022.
As part of the company’s advanced intermediates business, the plant will also enable WCGC to explore expansion to new markets in custom manufacturing and improve its performance.
WeylChem Group of Companies is part of the International Chemicals Investors Group (ICIG).
The group primarily focuses on the custom manufacturing of speciality chemicals, supplying customers with advanced intermediates and reagents for different applications.
It comprises nine companies in Europe and North America and employs more than 1,380 people.
