Scientific studies confirm that of all the senses, smell offers the best recall. In Scent Memories, the Cut asks people about the scents they associate with different times in their lives.
Next up is actress Adria Arjona, star of next year’s Marvel film Morbius and the face of Armani Beauty’s new floral fragrance, My Way. A bright bouquet of tuberose, vanilla, and orange blossom, My Way is a sustainably sourced, carbon-neutral perfume housed in a refillable, recyclable bottle. The Cut caught up with Arjona to talk restaurant candles, papayas, and gas stations.
My first scent memory is: My mom’s perfume, which smells like roses.
Happiness smells like: Orange blossom. It’s one of my favorite smells; it instantly makes me happy. If I could have one smell on my hands forever, it’d be an orange blossom hand cream.
Love smells like: A campfire — nice and cozy.
Heartbreak or loss smells like: Nothing. I feel like you lose your senses when you’re sad.
Friendship smells like: Rosé or vanilla.
Regret smells like: Tequila.
Success smells like: An oaky smell. I feel like every fancy restaurant has an oaky-smelling candle burning somewhere.
The worst smell is: Papaya. It smells like vomit to me. You’ll remember me when you smell a papaya!
My ideal vacation smells like: Refreshing ocean breeze.
My home smells like: Palo santo, which I love to burn.
My favorite food smells like: Freshly squeezed lime.
The first thing I smell in the morning is: Black Guatemalan coffee, straight up.
The last thing I smell before I go to bed: Lavender. I have an aromatherapy diffuser, and I’ll just diffuse a little bit of lavender oil and my whole room will smell like it. It’s really been helping me sleep better in these crazy times.
A scent or smell that I love that others usually don’t: Petrol. Gas. I love the smell of a gas station [laughs]. I really love it. It’s so good. I think the only other person that I know that likes it is my father.
I smell like: My Way, right now. It’s very inviting and has orange blossom in it, which is one of my favorite smells. It has different touches of white flowers as well, but it’s just really happy, fresh, and really joyful. Joy is a feeling I need right now, so I’ve been spraying it, constantly. What I love about perfumes is that they are so personal; I put it on for me more than I do for other people.
