Today our Sense of Place Los Angeles series takes us to downtown LA. We visited back in early March, just before the everything started shutting down because of the pandemic.

For over two decades, a small venue called The Smell has been home to lots of LA bands and musicians, including artists like No Age, Ty Segall, Mika Miko, Best Coast, Warpaint and Feels. The Smell isn't your average music venue. To get there, you turn down a nondescript back alley. The entrance is next to a dumpster, with a set of double doors inside a small enclave that open into a dark but cavernous space. And it does ... kinda smell. It's not a bad smell, but it's distinctive.

Jim Smith started The Smell more than 20 years ago. It's an all ages DIY community-based music and art space. By day, Smith works as a union organizer. And at night he works here, organizing a different kind of community. In this Sense of Place Los Angeles episode, learn how the audience, the artists and the people who book shows and work at The Smell are all part of the same community.
